Understanding Nouns (The Basics)

Nouns are one of the most important parts of English grammar. A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.

For example:

  • Person: teacher, doctor, Sarah
  • Place: school, Accra, market
  • Thing: book, phone, chair
  • Idea: happiness, love, freedom

There are different types of nouns:

1. Common Nouns
These are general names.
Example: city, car, boy

2. Proper Nouns
These are specific names and always start with a capital letter.
Example: Ghana, Kumasi, John

3. Countable Nouns
You can count them.
Example: one book, two apples

4. Uncountable Nouns
You cannot count them individually.
Example: water, rice, information

Quick Tip 💡

If you can put a number before it (like “one” or “two”), it’s probably a countable noun.
