Using Articles (a, an, the)

Articles are small words, but they are very important in English. The three main articles are a, an, and the.

1. “A” and “An” (Indefinite Articles)

Use “a” before words that start with a consonant sound:

  • a book
  • a car

Use “an” before words that start with a vowel sound:

  • an apple
  • an hour

👉 Note: It’s about the sound, not just the letter.

2. “The” (Definite Article)

Use “the” when talking about something specific:

  • the book on the table
  • the teacher in our class

When to Use Each

  • “a/an” → something general
  • “the” → something specific

Example:

  • I saw a dog (any dog)
  • I saw the dog (a specific dog)

Quick Tip 💡

If the listener knows what you’re talking about, use “the”
